II. Introduction of the Master Program of Chemistry
Chemistry is a key first-level academic discipline at SCMU. Rooted in the School of Chemistry and Materials Science (founded in 1981), the discipline has built a complete talent training system covering bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and postdoctoral programs. It is a national first-class construction discipline and ranks among the top 0.3% worldwide in the ESI global rankings. Supported by Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering also ranks among the top 1% globally in ESI, forming an interconnected and synergistic disciplinary ecosystem.
The School of Chemistry and Material Science houses a 13,000-square-meter laboratory complex and 7 provincial and ministerial-level research platforms. It is equipped with state-of-the-art, internationally accredited instruments—including various electron microscopes and spectrometers—with a total value of nearly 200 million RMB.
The master program of chemistry possesses a resourced and rigorous academic staff. It boasts a strong faculty of 83 members, including 33 professors and 25 doctoral supervisors. Among them, 34 talents are recognized at or above the provincial and ministerial level, and there are 6 provincial and ministerial-level innovation research teams.
The master program of chemistry is a three-year degree program. It focuses on four core research directions: Physical Chemistry: Efficient conversion and utilization of carbon-based resources; Materials& Biophysical Chemistry: Design and synthesis of functional nanomaterials; Polymer Chemistry & Physics: Advanced materials for energy and environmental applications; Organic Chemistry: Organic synthesis methodology and preparation of functional molecules.
The Chemistry discipline equally values original scientific research and applied development. Over the past five years, it has undertaken over 70 national-level projects (including key NSFC programs) with nearly 100 million RMB in funding, and published more than 500 SCI papers in top international journals such as Nature Sustainability, PNAS, Nature Comm. Science Advances, JACS, Angew. Chem., and Advanced Materials. It has won 1 Second-Class National Technological Invention Award, 4 First-Class and 5 Second-Class provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, demonstrating strong capacity in basic innovation and advanced technological breakthroughs.
